Prevention
There is no vaccine. Prevention is the only defense.
Every documented case traces back to rodent exposure. Reducing contact with rodents and their waste is the single most effective measure.
Seal entry points
Close gaps larger than 6mm in walls, foundations, and around pipes. Steel wool and caulk are effective. Check seasonally as rodents exploit new openings within days.
Store food properly
Use thick plastic or glass containers with tight lids. Clean up crumbs and spills the same day. Don't leave pet food out overnight.
Ventilate before entering
Open all windows and doors for at least 30 minutes before entering any building that's been closed for a period. This applies especially to cabins, sheds, and storage areas.
Clean safely
Never sweep or vacuum rodent droppings. This launches virus into the air. Spray with a 1:10 bleach solution, wait 5 minutes, then wipe with gloves. Double-bag waste.
Wear protection
Rubber or latex gloves plus an N95 mask when handling anything in rodent-affected areas. Wash hands thoroughly with soap afterward. Change clothes before entering living spaces.
Manage the landscape
Keep grass short within 30 feet of your home. Move woodpiles, junk, and dense vegetation away from the building. Eliminate food and water sources that attract rodents.
