Transmission

The transmission chain from rodent to human.

Hantavirus is not airborne in the traditional sense. It becomes aerosolized when dried rodent waste is disturbed. Person-to-person transmission has not been documented in the Americas, with the rare exception of the Andes virus in South America.

1

Infected rodents

Deer mice, cotton rats, and other species carry hantaviruses chronically without showing symptoms. They shed the virus throughout their lives.

2

Contaminated environment

Virus is shed through urine, droppings, and saliva. It accumulates in enclosed spaces like sheds, cabins, barns, and crawl spaces where rodents nest.

3

Airborne particles

When disturbed by sweeping, vacuuming, or simply walking through, dried materials release microscopic virus particles into the air.

4

Human inhalation

A person breathes in the aerosolized particles. The virus enters the lungs, begins replicating, and symptoms emerge within 1 to 5 weeks.

Is hantavirus airborne?

Hantavirus is not classified as airborne like measles or tuberculosis. It does not linger in open air or travel long distances. However, when dried rodent waste is disturbed in enclosed spaces, virus particles become temporarily suspended in the air. This is why proper ventilation and wet-cleaning methods are critical.

Can you get hantavirus on a cruise ship?

While uncommon, rodent infestations in any enclosed environment, including ships, can create conditions for hantavirus exposure. The 2026 MV Hondius incident demonstrated that confined spaces with poor ventilation amplify risk when rodent contamination is present.
